American Express (AXP) to Announce Strong Quarterly Numbers

American Express Company (AXP) is scheduled to announce its fourth quarter earnings on January 19th. The company would be declaring the numbers after market close. American express is expected to report its earnings for the fourth quarter of the year at $0.96 per share, down from its third quarter earnings of $1.03 per share. The banking company is likely to exhibit strong credit quality for the quarter. It is also expected to contain its credit losses from escalating.

Expectations

American express is expected to report its quarterly revenue at $7.7 billion, up 6 percent on year over year basis. It had reported $7.3 billion in revenue for the corresponding quarter of the last year. American express has also shown growth in its billed business and thus is expected to report its discounted revenue at $4.5 billion, up 9 percent on year over year basis. The company's net card fees are likely to be reported at $562 billion, up 5 percent on year over year basis. Its net interest revenue for the year is expected to be at $1.2 billion, up 1 percent from the corresponding quarter of the last year.

Third Quarter Results

American express had reported its third quarter earnings at $1.03 per share.  Its revenue for the quarter stood at $7.5 billion, while its discounted revenue was reported at $208 billion. The company had earned $1.1 billion in net interest in revenue. American express had reported its net card fees at $556 million and the company's travel commissions stood at $480 million for the third quarter of FY 2011. American express had also reported $604 million in other commissions and fees. The company's other revenues stood at $534 million.  Its marketing and promotional expenses stood at $757 million.

Punch Line

American express is expected to report solid results for the fourth quarter. The company's billed business is likely to increase during the quarter and its net interest revenue is also expected to show improvement. The company's M&P expenses are also expected to show decline. American express is expected to be able to augment its reserves during the quarter.
