Earnings Scan: AIR, ISCA, HELE, HITK, WDFC

The corporate earnings release for Thursday was weak, with few of the companies declaring their quarterly results before the market opened today, while few companies are scheduled to report their earnings after the closing bell. Some notable earners are discussed here.


AAR Corp. (NYSE: AIR), after the closing bell Wednesday reported its fourth quarter FY 2011 financial results. The company reported record sales of $479.8 million for the quarter, up 32 percent, compared to $364.8 million in the same quarter last fiscal. Net income for the quarter was $21.4 million, or $0.52 per diluted share, compared with net income of $11.2 million, or $0.29 per diluted share reported for the fourth quarter FY 2010. AAR’s shares were up 6.77 percent to $30.61 in the initial hour of trading Thursday.


International Speedway Corp. (Nasdaq: ISCA), owner of motorsports entertainment facilities, said that total revenues for the second quarter FY 2011 were $138.8 million, compared to revenues of $142.2 million in the prior-year period. Operating income for the quarter increased to $24.1 million, compared to $21.3 million in the second quarter of fiscal 2010. Net income for the second quarter increased to $11.9 million, or $0.25 per diluted share, compared to net income of $10.3 million, or $0.21 per diluted share, in the prior year. ISCA was down 1.04 percent to $29.59 on Thursday.


Helen of Troy Ltd. (Nasdaq: HELE) designer, developer and worldwide marketer of brand-name personal care and household consumer products, reported its first quarter FY 2012 record net sales revenue of $271 million, up 70 percent, compared with net sales revenue of $160 million in the same quarter last fiscal. First quarter net income was $24.6 million, or $0.78 per diluted share, compared with net income of $18.38 million, or $0.59 per diluted share, for the same period in the prior year. Operating income for the quarter increased by 34.8 percent to $30.6 million, from $22.73 million in same period last year. HELE was trading higher by 1.23 percent to $36.11 today.


Hi-Tech Pharmacal Co. Inc. (Nasdaq: HITK) reported its fourth quarter FY 2011 net sales of $57.2 million, an increase of 45 percent from $39.4 million for the same period last year. Net income for the quarter was $12.7 million or $.98 per fully diluted share, compared to a net income of $6.5 million or $.50 per fully diluted share for the same period in the prior year. The reported earnings exceeded Wall Street’s estimate of $0.71 per share for the quarter. Shares of HITK were trading higher by 7.93 percent to $31.18 on Thursday.


WD-40 Company (Nasdaq: WDFC) is scheduled to report its third quarter FY 2011 earnings at 4:00 PM EST on Thursday. Analysts at Wall Street expect WD-40 to report earnings of $0.53 per share for the quarter. Shares of WD-40 were up 0.91 percent to $41.22 in the initial hour of trading Thursday.
