  • BERLIN - An exit poll indicated Sunday that German chancellor Angela Merkel's conservative party has suffered a defeat in a state election after almost six decades in power there.
  • The opposition anti-nuclear Greens could win their first-ever governorship, the exit poll for Baden-Wuerttemberg state published by public broadcaster ARD also found.
  • The poll puts the Greens at 25 percent and the center-left Social Democrats at 23.5 percent, securing them a majority to form a coalition government in the state.

    • SANAA, Yemen - Islamic militants seized control of a weapons factory, a strategic mountain and a nearby town in the southern Yemen province of Abyan Sunday, said a witness and security officials, as a political stalemate in the capital causes security to unravel around the country.
    • The fragile nation has been rocked by weeks of mass protests against the long-serving president Ali Abdullah Saleh, who refuses to step down.
    • Residents of the southern Abyan province said police reduced their presence in towns weeks ago.

        • DAMASCUS, Syria - Syria's government said Sunday that unknown gunmen firing from rooftops and prowling the streets of the Mediterranean city of Latakia are to blame for two days of violence that killed 12 people.
        • A week of political unrest in southern Syria expanded on Friday to other parts of the country, including Latakia, a scenic seaside city in the north where the streets echoed with gunfire after around 3,000 protesters held a peaceful rally to demand political freedoms.
        • The government's tally of the dead was the first official account of the scale of the violence there.

          • WASHINGTON - Millions of retired and disabled people in the United States had better brace for another year with no increase in Social Security payments.
          • About 45 million people - one in seven in the country - receive both Medicare and Social Security.
