The stocks in the market added to modest gains after a slew of economic news. US core consumer prices rose at their quickest pace, more than a year in January as the Federal Reserve's monetary policy came into focus again with signs of inflation creeping into the global economy.

The consumer price index, CPI, increased to 0.4 percent in January 2011 along with an increase in producer price index, PPI, of 0.8 percent. Import and export prices continued to trend upward in January, rising 1.5 percent and 1.2 percent, respectively.

Although, the technology sector showed strength with Nvidia Corp (NasdaqGS: NVDA) up 6.7 percent to $24.96 a day after a bullish revenue forecast, the stock has been moved to hold from buy at Citigroup. There are only few companies in the market whose stock has been upgraded as compared to the companies in the downgraded list.

Initiations:

The brokerage firm Collins Stewart initiated the stock of BMC Software, Inc. (NasdaqGS: BMC) at a buy, assigning $57 as its price objective on Thursday. Currently, the stock is trading up 0.79 percent at $50.88.

The stock of Abraxas Petroleum Corporation (NasdaqCM: AXAS) is up sharply before the bell on an outperform initiation at Robert W. Baird on Thursday. The shares of the company are trading at $5.23 gaining a high percentage of 7.39 in the market.

Analysts at Dahlman Rose introduced the stock of Alon USA Energy, Inc. (NYSE: ALJ) in the market as hold on Thursday. The company shares are showing a gain of 2.11 percent at $11.14.

Upgrades:

The FBR Capital has upgraded Biomed Realty Trust Inc. (NYSE: BMR) from market perform to outperform primarily because of an increase of around 76 percent in its net income in the fourth-quarter. The stock is presently trading at $17.76, up 1.49 percent.

The stock of Fair Isaac Corp. (NYSE: FICO), which is currently trading at $27.66, gaining 9.13 percent, has been upgraded by the analysts at Wedbush and Northland Securities from underperform to neutral and market perform to outperform, respectively.

Teen dream clothing outfit company Abercrombie & Fitch (NYSE: ANF), which rose 7.58 percent yesterday after earnings, is upgraded to positive from neutral at Susquehanna on Thursday. The stock shed by 1.95 percent, trading at $58.58 at present.

Downgrades:

The stock of Cimarex Energy Co. (NYSE: XEC) has been downgraded by UBS from buy to neutral. Reportedly, a decrease in the profit margin of the company was responsible to some extent for the downgrade. The stock is trading at $113.91, up 1.34 percent.

Analysts at Northland Securities downgraded the stock of Cray Inc. (NasdaqGS: CRAY) from outperform to market perform on Thursday. The company’s shares fell back 9.20 percent at $7.50.

Genzyme (GENZ): The stock is downgraded to hold from buy at Jefferies with target price of $80.

Stifel Nicolaus has downgraded Dreamworks Animation SKG, Inc. (NasdaqGS: DWA) from hold to sell. The stock is trading down at $28.04 by 3.64 percent on Thursday. It adds that fourth quarter results on February 24 will highlight these challenges.

Nokia Corporation (NYSE: NOK) faced a downgrade from neutral to sell on Thursday. The company’s stock is trading at $9.08, a 0.22 percent cut.
