A Few Positive Stocks While US Stock Market Feels North Korean Firing Heat

US stock index is doomed to continue going down as the global economic concerns deepen with tensions rising on the Korean peninsula. North Korea fired dozens of artillery shells onto South Korea's territory, killing at least two marines and leaving many wounded. The attacked country has returned fire. Besides this, investors are still in turmoil over Irish bailout. Irish Prime Minister Brian Cowen has challenged the opposition to pass an austerity budget and set off an EU/IMF bailout before early elections. But Irish media reported, Cowen may be demanded to resign immediately or his party may turnover leadership after a meeting held by the party later today.

 

Briefing Monday's market performance, futures for the Dow Jones Industrial Average went down by 85 points, or 76 points below fair value, at 11,080. Futures for the S&P 500 moved down by 12 points, or 10 points below fair value, at 1186, whereas Nasdaq futures were down by 16 points, or 12 points below fair value. Nasdaq was the only stock exchange to end Monday's market session in positive direction.

 

At 9:10 am EST, the stock market has got second reading on the US third-quarter gross domestic product. As expected by economists, GDP growth was revised up to an annualized rate of 2.5 percent from 2 percent. The Commerce Department has said that exports, consumer and government spending were higher than initially estimated.

 

At 2 pm EST, the Federal Open Market Committee will release the minutes from its November meeting containing the Fed's updated economic forecasts and more detailed rationale. It will attract focus of investors because it is going to effect policymakers' decision to further expand the balance sheet.

On Monday, Hewlett-Packard was the biggest name to rise in stock market after it disclosed its results. HP shares went up by 2.1% to $ 44.15 in the pre-market trading. On Tuesday, 09:38 am EST, (NYSE: HPQ) has moved up by 2.20% to $44.27 and it is continuously increasing. So, HP is the first positive stock for today's session. It is expected to maintain its growth for a number of days to come.

 

The five stocks currently listed on the Dow Jones Sustainability United States Index that have produced positive returns over the past year can be considered as good options, because they can produce magical results as HP did. These are: 3M Co. (NYSE: MMM), The Dow Chemical Company (NYSE:DOW), McDonald's Corp (NYSE: MCD), Starbucks Corp (Nasdaq: SBUX) and Walt Disney (NYSE: DIS). These companies have already shown positive and great price change in past 52 week record.
