LAGOS, Nov. 19, 2010 (Xinhua News Agency) -- Nigeria's main militant group, the Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta (MEND) on Friday threatened to resume new hostilities on oil installations after troops rescued 19 hostages from one of their camps on Wednesday.

"The Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta (MEND) confirms that there was indeed a raid on this particular community by the Nigerian Military which had being tipped-off by certain persons from this community," the group spokesperson Jomo Gbomo said in a statement reaching here.

"As a result of the bombings by the Nigerian military of camps and communities, hostages, earlier taken from oil installations where kept in a community to ensure their safety," the group added.

"The hostages were guarded by only a few of our fighters who retreated in order to prevent an exchange of fire that would have endangered the lives of these hostages," it said.

"However, our fighters have being instructed to carry out more raids on oil installations from where fresh hostages will be taken, " MEND added.

"As earlier promised, we will soon commence with a all-out attack on oil installations across the Niger Delta," the group said.

Nigerian troops on Wednesday night rescued 19 people kidnapped by militants at different locations in the Niger Delta.

The victims were rescued by a combined team of Joint Task Force (JTF) and Marine Police.

They were rescued at different militant camps in the creeks around new Calabar River.

The team achieved the feat through sea and air raids.

Four Nigerians working with Shell, eight Nigerian Mobil Oil workers and two Americans were amongst those rescued.

Others include two French, two Indonesians and one Canadian.

The troops said the operation is a continuous exercise, adding that the police and other security agencies would continue to maintain the peace in the area.

The militant group claimed responsibility for the attacks on the Exxon Mobil (NYSE:XOM) Ibeno oil facility and the London-based oil exploration firm Afren offshore oil rig.

The militant group re-emphasized that it will launch a major operation that will simultaneously affect oil facilities across the Niger Delta in the coming weeks.

The group is known for a series of attacks on international oil companies in the Niger Delta, engaging in actions including sabotage, theft, property destruction, guerilla warfare and kidnapping.

The Niger Delta is an unstable area where inter-ethnic clashes are commonplace. Access to oil revenue is the trigger for the violence.

Over 300 foreigners have been seized in the Niger Delta since 2006. Almost all have been released unharmed after paying a ransom.
