SAN FRANCISCO - Roy Halladay outdueled Tim Lincecum in a rematch of aces, keeping Philadelphia alive with a 4-2 victory over the San Francisco Giants on Thursday night that pulled the Phillies within 3-2 in the NL championship series.

Jayson Werth homered for an insurance run in the ninth, Placido Polanco hit an RBI single and the two-time reigning NL champions forced a Game 6 back home in Citizens Bank Park on Saturday and another cross-country trip.

Shane Victorino drove in the first of two runs that scored on Aubrey Huff's third-inning fielding error.

San Francisco put its celebration on hold. The Giants now must win once in two tries at Philly for the franchise's fourth pennant since moving West in 1958.

  • French Senate passes pension overhaul Oct 22, 2021 06:46 PM

    • PARIS - Under pressure from the government, the French Senate voted Friday to raise the retirement age to 62 from 60, a victory for President Nicolas Sarkozy after days of street rage, acrimonious debate and strikes that dried up the supply of gasoline across the country.
    • The vote all but sealed passage of the highly unpopular measure, but it was unlikely to end the increasingly radicalized protests.
    • The coming days promised more work stoppages and demonstrations by those who feel changing the retirement age threatens a French birthright.
      • Calif. coroner IDs body left in car for months Oct 22, 2021 06:38 PM

        • COSTA MESA, Calif. - Medical examiners have identified a mummified corpse that was left in a car's passenger seat for 10 months in Southern California, a police spokesman said Friday.
        • Authorities had said earlier it could take weeks to identify the homeless woman, but the Orange County coroner's office was able to rehydrate the desiccated body's fingertips to obtain a usable fingerprint, said Costa Mesa police Detective Sgt. Paul Beckman.
        • The woman's remains, discovered Monday in a car parked illegally in Costa Mesa, are little more than skin and bones and weigh 30 pounds, said police Sgt. Ed Everett.

            • WASHINGTON - Health insurers flirted with Democrats, supported them with money and got what they wanted: a federal mandate that most Americans carry health care coverage.
            • Now they're backing Republicans, hoping a GOP Congress will mean friendlier regulations.
            • They may get more than they're wishing for.

                • ATLANTA - As many as 1 in 3 U.S. adults could have diabetes by 2050, federal officials announced Friday in a dramatic new projection that represents a threefold increase.
                • The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimate that 1 in 10 have diabetes now, but the number could grow to 1 in 5 or even 1 in 3 by mid-century if current trends continue.

                    • WASHINGTON - NPR and its public radio stations around the country got an earful from listeners and angry citizens in the middle of pledge season Friday over its firing of commentator Juan Williams, receiving thousands of complaints and scattered threats to withhold donations.
                    • Still, a number of major stations said they are meeting or surpassing their fundraising goals in the wake of the furor over Williams' dismissal for saying he gets nervous on a plane when he sees Muslims.
                    • Meanwhile, conservative leaders including Sarah Palin are calling on Congress to cut off NPR's federal funding - an idea that was also raised in the 1990s and didn't get very far.
