NEW YORK, Oct. 1, 2010 (Kyodo News International) -- The U.S. dollar dropped to the lower 83 yen level and hit an eight-month low against the euro in New York on Friday amid persistent speculation about further U.S. credit easing.

At 5 p.m., the dollar changed hands at 83.17-27 yen, compared with 83.33-34 yen in Tokyo at 5 p.m. Friday.

The euro fetched $1.3786-3796 and 114.73-83 yen versus $1.3679-3681 and 113.99-114.03 yen late Friday in Tokyo. The single European currency also advanced against the yen, briefly touching 114.86 yen, the highest in about four and a half months.

The dollar gradually lost ground despite caution against market intervention by Japan's financial authorities to check the yen's rise, dealers said.

Earlier Friday in London, the U.S. currency fell to as low as 83.15 yen, the lowest against the yen since Japan stepped into the market on Sept. 15.

Market participants also shifted their funds to the high-yielding euro, which gained ground both against the dollar and the yen, they said.
