Sep. 9, 2010 (United Press International) -- Microsoft (NASDAQ:MSFT) said it owed a 26-year-old Xbox gamer an apology after suspending him from Internet gaming because he listed his hometown as Fort Gay, W.Va.
Without checking to see if Fort Gay really existed -- it turns out, it does -- Google (NASDAQ:GOOG) suspended Josh Moore for violating it policy that prohibits offensive language on Xbox Live, PCWorld reported Thursday.
The policy, which is intended to prevent such offenses, apparently backfired. "I was mad. It makes me feel like they hate gay people. I'm not even gay, and it makes me feel like they were discriminating," Moore said.
Xbox Live policy director Stephen Toulouse said he would apologize to Moore for the mistake.
