CNN and Opinion Research Corp. in Washington released a survey Tuesday showing 46 percent of Americans say they think congressional Republicans would be better in handling the economy, with 43 percent saying they believe Democrats are better on the issue.

Among independent voters, the GOP leads 51 percent to 32 percent, with a 9-point advantage among people 65 and older on the issue, the poll showed.

Republicans have a slight 3-point advantage on taxes and a 6-point lead on their ability to attack the federal budget deficit.

The GOP has a 20-point lead on the war against terrorism, an 18-point advantage on illegal immigration and a 3-point edge on the war in Afghanistan, the poll showed.

"Democrats have slightly better numbers than the Republicans on just two issues -- Social Security and healthcare -- and on both of them, that gap is extremely small. That's bad news for the Democrats, who in past elections have had large leads over the GOP on those domestic issues," said CNN Polling Director Keating Holland.

The poll was conducted Sept. 1-2, with 1,024 adult Americans questioned over the telephone. The overall sampling error is plus or minus 3 percentage points.
