BEIJING, Aug. 24, 2010 (Xinhua News Agency) -- China has attached great importance to carbon trade, but it remains in pilot phase in China, said Liu Qiang, vice director with Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) management center of Energy Research Institute of the National Development and Reform Commission on Aug. 23.

Except for the smooth development of CDM market, carbon trade remains in pilot phase in general in China, and China is seeking for better carbon trade mode fitting China's economic development and emission reduction target through more pilot programs.

In the beginning of August, the NDRC announced to launch pilot low carbon programs in five provinces and eight cities in China. Beijing, Tianjin and Shanghai have founded carbon exchanges, and began to conduct pilot carbon trading.

Liu Qiang holds that although China's emission reduction target has sent out a clear political signal to carbon trade, it requires a lot more pilot programs before actually achieving carbon trade in China. (Edited by Li Xiaohui, lixh@xinhua.org)
