TOKYO, Aug. 23, 2010 (Kyodo News International) -- Sharp Corp. President Mikio Katayama said Monday that his company's multifunctional device that allows users to access e-book content will be sold in autumn, and a model that can project three-dimensional images and videos is likely to be sold next year or later.

''I believe 3-D will catch on for the market of smartphone and tablet computers,'' and that the firm will package its device to be compatible with 3-D technology without using special eyeglasses, Katayama said in an interview with Kyodo News.

Katayama's remark comes after the company announced in July its entry into the e-book market later this year by launching a device that allows users to access video and audio contents, in addition to text and still images.

Rivals include U.S. technology giant Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) which released in late May its iPad tablet computer and Japanese electronics giant Sony Corp. (NYSE:SNE) , which is set to launch its own e-book reader device soon.

The Osaka-based electronics firm also aims to roll out the device in the United States sometime this year, and in emerging economies next fiscal year, said Katayama, who said the device will also be utilized for other purposes such as e-commerce.

Katayama said he was confident that Sharp's product can compete against popular rival products including the iPad tablet computer by offering features such as being able to play Flash content. Flash content is a format used in many videos online, but the iPad cannot run Flash.

In line with the growing 3-D market, Sharp announced earlier that it will release in Japan and abroad by next March a smartphone on which users can view 3-D images without the use of special glasses.

As the firm expands its business beyond the domestic market, Katayama said Sharp intends to increase its hiring of non-Japanese nationals, and consider making it a standard for Japanese employees to have experience in working abroad.
