MUMBAI, Aug. 16, 2010 (Xinhua News Agency) -- Indian main stock index Sensex opened at 18,169.80 points Monday, 2.77 points higher from previous close of 18,167.03 points, on slowdown of Japanese economy.

The index gained 16.47 points or 0.09 percent after 53 minutes of trading in the morning session.

Consumer durables, realty and fast moving consumer goods sectors gained 0.9 percent, 0.78 percent and 0.64 percent, respectively.

Indian copper maker Sterlite Industries, Tata Steel (OOTC:TAELF) , consumer goods producer Hindustan Unilever (NYSE:UL) grew 1.65 percent, 1.6 percent and 1.54 percent.

Meanwhile, technological, IT and health care sectors declined 0. 65 percent, 0.56 percent and 0.2 percent, respectively.

Indian drug maker CIPLA, Reliance Communications and industrial firm Jaipraksh Associations lost 3.77 percent, 3.03 percent and 1. 24 percent.

Sensex is the common name for the Bombay Stock Exchange Sensitive Index. It consists of the 30 largest and most actively traded stocks, representative of various sectors, on the Bombay Stock Exchange.
