LIC Housing Fin accumulates fresh long positions

Turnover surged to Rs 91,381 crore in the F&O segment on Wednesday. The Nifty futures closed weak at 5,411.9, and also in discount with respect to the spot close of 5,420.6. The Nifty futures added fresh short positions in today's trade. It added 8.67 lakh shares or 2.6 per cent in open interest.

Option trading indicates negative bias. While 5,400 put shed 10 per cent or 9.38 lakh shares, indicating the strong emergence of put writers, the 5,400 call added 10.68 lakh shares or 22 per cent in open interest. The 5,500 call, however, shed 2.53 lakh shares or 3 per cent in open interest, suggesting traders preferred to unwind long on 5,300.

Stock futures

Tata Motors futures was the most active and continues to add long position. The futures closed at Rs 1,001.55 against the spot close of Rs 1,006.2. It added 8.62 lakh shares or 6.31 per cent in open interest, taking the total open interest to 1.45 crore shares.

LIC Housing Finance futures witnessed accumulation of fresh long position in today's trade. It added 10 per cent or 2.41 lakh shares in open interest. It closed at Rs 1,220.7 with respect to the spot close of Rs 1,212.5.

Tata Communications futures also added fresh long position. It closed at Rs 323 over the spot price of Rs 321, and added 2.97 lakh shares or 17.45 per cent in open interest.

Reliance Industries, which is just about three per cent away from its 52-week low, accumulated further short positions. The futures closed at Rs 988.65 over the spot price of Rs 981.65 and accumulated 8.29 lakh shares or three per cent in open interest.

Unitech futures also added fresh shorts. It closed at Rs 86.6 against the underlying equity value of Rs 86.4, added 28.8 lakh shares or 6.23 per cent in open interest.

Bharti Airtel, which announced its Q1 performance today, was the other counter to add fresh shorts. It closed at Rs 320 with respect to the spot close of Rs 320.8 and added 4.58 lakh shares or 2.13 per cent.

FII activity

Foreign institutional investors remained net buyers to the tune of Rs 521.58 crore, thanks to their heavy buying in index options worth Rs 1,738.39 crore. They were net sellers in index futures by Rs 836.66 crore and Rs 279.93 crore stock futures.
