LAGOS, Jul. 24, 2010 (Xinhua News Agency) -- The Nigeria Police Force is currently training 100 officers as explosives disposal experts in readiness for the 2011 general elections.

The police commissioner for explosive ordinance disposal, Chris Olakpe, told reporters in Lagos on Friday that the policemen would complete the training on July 24 at the Police College.

The policemen were the first batch to be trained as explosives ordinance disposal technical experts, he said.

Olakpe said the training of the second batch would start soon.

He said the training was in line with police authority's efforts to build the capacity of its personnel to meet security challenges.

"The training is to build the capacity of police personnel to curb and control incidences of terrorism and wrong usage of explosives in the country. We are preparing for the 2011 general elections," Olakpe said.

The commissioner also decried the illegal importation of explosive devices and radio-active elements into the country.

He said about 46 explosive-related incidences were recorded in the country between January 2009 and April 2010.

"What are worrisome are isolated cases of importation of explosive products and radio-active elements without valid permits, " he said.

"There is need for a stiff penalty for the offence to avoid the dangers associated with such devices," he added.
