GAZA -- European Union (EU) foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton on Sunday arrived at the Gaza Strip on a second visit this year to inspect humanitarian situation there after Israel eased its three-year-old tight blockade.

Ashton crossed into Gaza via Erez crossing point through Israel. The main appointments on her agenda are meetings with officials from the UN Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) and touring EU-funded projects. (Palestinians-EU-Gaza-2nd LD)

HOUSTON -- British oil company BP has decided to extend its test on the ruptured oil well in the Gulf of Mexico where huge oil leak has so far been temporarily shut off by a new well cap, officials said on Saturday.

"As we continue to see success in the temporary halt of oil from the leak, the U.S. government and BP have agreed to allow the well integrity test to continue another 24 hours," Thad Allen, the U.S. Coast Guard commander in charge of the spill response, said in a statement. (U.S.-BP-Oil Spill )

BAGHDAD -- The death toll from the suicide bomb attack at a base of a paramilitary group members in southwest of Baghdad on Sunday morning rose to 43 with another 40 wounded, an Interior Ministry source said.

"Our latest report said that 43 Awakening Council group members were killed and 40 others were wounded by the suicide bombing of Radwaniyah," the source told Xinhua on condition of anonymity. (Iraq-Bombings-2nd LD)

SAN FRANCISCO -- An earthquake of 6.7 magnitude on the Richter scale hits off the coast of U.S. state Alaska Saturday evening, the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) reported on Sunday.

According to the USGS, the quake occurred at about 9:56 p.m. local time (0556 GMT) at a depth of 35 km, in the regions of Aleutian Islands, and was located 45 km west of Nikolski, Alaska. (U.S.-Earthquake)
