Nationalist Baluch leader gunned down in Pakistan's Quetta

ISLAMABAD, Jul. 14, 2010 (Kyodo News International) -- Prominent Baluch nationalist leader Habib Jalib Bluch was gunned down by unidentified men in Quetta on Wednesday morning triggering violent protests all over Pakistan's Baluchistan Province, a senior police official said.

Jalib, secretary general of the Baluch National Party, was killed by three gunmen on bicycle at around 8 a.m., Quetta Police Chief Hamid Shakil said.

He was riddled with bullets as he was reading newspaper at a shop owned by his brother.

As news of his murder spread, markets all over the city were closed and people came onto the streets to protest.

Media reported protest meetings and rallies in other cities and towns in the province as well.

The Baluch National Party champions autonomy for Baluchs and carving out a ''Greater Baluchistan'' for Baluchs living in Pakistan, Iran and Afghanistan.
