China June steel exports at 5.62 mln t, up 293 pct on yr, Customs

BEIJING, Jul. 12, 2010 (Xinhua News Agency) -- China exported 5.62 million metric tons (tonnes) of steel products in June, the first time to exceed 5 million tonnes since September 2008, according to the latest statistics from China Customs.

The figure was 680,000 tonnes more than that of May, and up 293.01 percent from a year earlier.

In the January-June period, China saw a total export of 23.58 million tonnes steel products, up 152.3 percent from a year earlier.

China imported 1.47 million tonnes steel products in June, 110,000 tonnes more than that in May, but down 9.82 percent from a year earlier. Total imports of steel products from January to June were 8.44 million tonnes, up 3.8 percent on year, according to the Customs.

Iron ore imports in June dropped 14.69 percent from a year ago to 47.17 million tonnes, down 4.73 million tonnes from May. China's iron ore imports have been declining for three months in a run.

Accumulated imports of iron ore from January to June stood at 309.28 million tonnes, up 4.1 percent on year.

China exported 60,000 tonnes steel billets in June, and 120,000 tonnes between January and June. Meanwhile, steel billets imports in June were 20,000 tonnes, almost the same with that in May, and 260,000 tonnes from January to June, down 90.3 percent from a year earlier.

China exported 560,000 tonnes coke in June, 530,000 tonnes more than a year earlier. And total coke exports from January to June rose 507.9 percent on year to 1.4 million tonnes. (Edited by Zhang Yuenan, zhangyuenan@xinhua.org)
