KAMPALA, Jul. 2, 2010 (Xinhua News Agency) -- Ugandan police on Friday said that it had handed over a top Rwandan genocide suspect arrested on Wednesday in the western part of the country to Interpol. Edward Ochom, the director of Criminal Investigations Directorate told Xinhua by telephone that Interpol will hand over Jean Bosco Uwinkindi, a pastor of the Pentecostal Church in Kanzenze, Kigali-Rural prefecture during the 1994 Rwanda genocide to International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda (ICTR) in Arusha, Tanzania for trials. "Our work only ended at arresting the suspect. I have already handed him to Interpol," said Ochom. "It's now Interpol to hand him over to ICTR court in Arusha for trial," he said.

Uwinkindi who has been on the wanted list of the ICTR was arrested on Wednesday in the Ugandan western district of Isingiro while he was traveling to the capital city of Kampala. The U.S. had offered a reward of up to five million U.S. dollars for information leading to his arrest or conviction. The indictment against Uwinkindi claims that prior to, and during the genocide he was a collaborator of the extremist Mouvement republicain national pour la democratie et le developpement (MRND) party and known for his hatred of Tutsis. He led a group of killers to look for and exterminate Tutsi civilians, and on numerous occasions planned, instigated, ordered and committed acts of genocide against Tutsis.

The prosecution further charges that after Uwinkindi fled Rwanda in July 1994, "approximately two thousand corpses" were found near his former church. Accordingly, Uwinkindi is charged with three counts of genocide, conspiracy to commit genocide and extermination as a crime against humanity. The Ugandan police in October last year arrested a former Rwandan intelligence officer, Idelphonse Nizeyimana, suspected of playing a key role in the 1994 genocide. He was transferred to ICTR in Tanzania for trials. The 1994 Rwandan genocide left an estimated 800,000 people, mostly the Tutsi minority and some moderate Hutu majority, dead in a period of three months.
