Verizon Unveils Motorola Droid X To Challenge iPhone

Verizon Wireless (NYSE: VZ) on Wednesday today unveiled DROID X by Motorola- a day before Apple's (NASDAQ:AAPL) iPhone 4 officially goes on sale.

The company said that it will begin selling the new Android-based smartphone, the follow-up to Motorola Inc. (NYSE: MOT)'s popular Droid, on July 15. The phone will cost $199.99 with a rebate and two-year wireless service contract.

The Droid X runs Google Inc.'s Android software and has a touch screen that is 4.3 inches diagonally and an 8-megapixel camera that can also record HD videos. Verizon said that Droid X buyers will get the newest Android software, version 2.2, as well as Adobe's Flash Player 10.1 for watching flash videos later this summer.

The smartphone boasts a 4.3-inch touch screen, 1GHz processor, 3G Mobile HotSpot capabilities, a dual-flash 8 MP camera, HD video recording and HDMI connectivity. 

Meanwhile, Google (NASDAQ: GOOG) announced Wednesday that it is activating 160,000 Android smartphones per day, up from 100,000 phones per day in May.
