BEIJING, Jun. 20, 2010 (Kyodo News International) --
(Editors: UPDATING WITH REPORT OF 46 DEAD)

At least 46 miners are dead after an explosion hit a coal mine early Monday in Henan Province in eastern central China, state media said.

The country's work safety watchdog said earlier at least 58 miners were trapped underground after the explosion took place at the Xingdong No. 2 mine in the province's Pingdingshan city at around 1:40 a.m.

Xinhua News Agency, in a short dispatch, quoted the local government as saying at least 46 miners died.

Two teams are carrying out rescue operations and the cause of the explosion is still unknown, the State Administration of Work Safety said in a statement.

China's coal mines are among the most dangerous work sites in the country, with mine accidents claiming 2,631 lives in 2009, according to figures by the administration.
