SEOUL, Jun. 15, 2010 (Kyodo News International) -- South Korea has dedicated a new solar power station on Japan-claimed islets known as Dokdo in South Korea and Takeshima in Japan, Yonhap News Agency reported Tuesday.

The 55-kilowatt facility, which was completed late last year, will generate power for a lighthouse and a Korea Coast Guard unit, Yonhap said, citing the Korea Electrical Contractors Association.

It will account for 30-40 percent of power consumption on the pair of islets that are disputed between Seoul and Tokyo, it said.

The islets' 50-some residents, including South Korean government officials and coast guard personnel, have so far been supplied with electric power generated by a diesel power plant.
