A Google Inc. (Nasdaq: GOOG) joint venture in China has applied for a regulatory license to operate an online map service in the country, an official at China’s State Bureau of Surveying and Mapping said Tuesday, China Business News reported Tuesday.

Google Inc. (Nasdaq: GOOG) has agreed to acquire online advertising company Admeld, a service that helps websites make more money from online advertising. It is the latest deal in Google’s buying spree of technology and talent to bolster initiatives outside its Internet search business, from social networking to mobile advertising.

Retail sector rose Monday as investors were cheered by the news that VF Corp. (NYSE: VFC), maker of Wrangler Jeans, has agreed to acquire Timberland for $2 billion. Shares of Timberland Co. surged 42.55 percent to $42.75 and VF Corp. shares gained 10.36 percent to $101.31 after the news, taking the retail sector higher outpacing the market.
