Sector Scan: Gold Mining and Mortgage Finance Sectors Rise, Mobile Telecommunications Lose

Gold mining sector added 2.18 percent to emerge as the market’s best performing sector, closely followed by mortgage finance with 1.25 percent gain. Mobile telecommunications lost 4.94 percent to become the day’s worst performing sector of the day.

Among major movers in the gold mining sector, Market Vectors Gold Miners ETF (NYSEArca: GDX) added 2.27 percent or $1.31 to trade at $58.67. Among major stocks, shares of Royal Gold, Inc. (Nasdaq: RGLD) gained 3.21 percent or $2.10 to trade at $67.55. Shares of US Gold Corp. (NYSE: UXG) added 3.53 percent or 23 cents to trade at $6.74. Shares of Vista Gold Corp. (AMEX: VGZ) added 2.54 percent or 8 cents to trade at $3.23.

In the mortgage finance sector, SPDR KBW Mortgage Finance ETF (NYSEArca: KME) was trading at $36.32, with zero percent change on its last close. Among major stocks, shares of Radian Group Inc. (NYSE: RDN) gained 16.56 percent or 51 cents to trade at $3.68. Shares of MGIC Investment Corp. (NYSE: MTG) added 0.76 percent or 3 cents to trade at $3.97. Shares of Investors Title Co. (Nasdaq: ITIC) were up 1.21 percent or 45 cents to trade at $37.65.

Among major movers in the mobile telecommunication sector, iShares Dow Jones US Telecom ETF (NYSEArca: IYZ) lost 2.29 percent or 53 cents to trade at $23. Among major stocks, shares of MetroPCS Communications Inc. (NYSE: PCS) slumped 29.91 percent or $4.85 to trade at $11.33. Shares of Leap Wireless International Inc. (Nasdaq: LEAP) fell 17.77 percent or $2.30 to trade at $10.70. Shares of Sprint Nextel Corp. (NYSE: S) slipped 4.66 percent or 19 cents to trade at $4.09.
