Sector Scan: Home Construction and Gold Mining Sectors Rise, Tobacco Industry Loses

Home construction sector added 2.09 percent to emerge as the market’s best performing sector, closely followed by gold mining sector with 2.08 percent gain. Tobacco industry lost 0.83 percent to become the day’s worst performing sector.

 

Among major movers in the home construction industry, PowerShares Dynamic Building & Construction (NYSEArca: PKB) added 0.44 percent or 6 cents to trade at $12.94. Among major stocks, shares of Hovnanian Enterprises Inc. (NYSE: HOV) were up 4.39 percent or 9 cents to trade at $2.14. Shares of Standard Pacific Corp. (NYSE: SPF) gained 3.52 percent or 12 cents to trade at $3.53. Shares of KB Home (NYSE: KBH) added 3.59 percent or 42 cents to trade at $12.11.

 

In the gold mining sector, Market Vectors Gold Miners ETF (NYSEArca: GDX) gained 1.72 percent or 93 cents to trade at $54.91. Among major stocks, shares of Allied Nevada Gold Corp. (AMEX: ANV) were up 5.31 percent or $1.74 to trade at $34.53. Shares of US Gold Corp. (NYSE: UXG) added 4.90 percent or 28 cents to trade at $6.20. Shares of Newmont Mining Corp. (NYSE: NEM) gained 1.52 percent or 81 cents to trade at $54.11.

 

Among major movers in the tobacco sector, shares of Lorillard, Inc. (NYSE: LO) fell 1.81 percent or $2.30 to trade at $109.86. Shares of Reynolds American Inc. (NYSE: RAI) were down 1.15 percent or 44 cents to trade at $37.73. Shares of Philip Morris International, Inc. (NYSE: PM) lost 1.31 percent or 89 cents to trade at $67.16.
