Obama signs Sept. 11 first responders bill
Jan 02, 2022 06:51 PM
HONOLULU - President Barack Obama said Sunday he was honored to sign a bill to provide aid to survivors of the Sept. 11 attacks and first responders who became ill working in the ruins at the World Trade Center.
"We will never forget the selfless courage demonstrated by the firefighters, police officers and first responders who risked their lives to save others," Obama said in a statement.
"I believe this is a critical step for those who continue to bear the physical scars of those attacks."
GOP agenda: Major impact may be on 2012 election
Jan 02, 2022 06:32 PM
WASHINGTON - The Republican agenda for the new Congress that convenes Wednesday may have a greater impact on the 2012 elections than on the lives of Americans in the next two years.
Getting this agenda through the House may be easier than in the Senate, given the GOP's 241-194 majority in the House.
Democrats still hold an edge there, though smaller than the one Obama had during his first two years in the White House.
Insurgent attacks kill 4 Iraqi security officers
Jan 02, 2022 06:22 PM
BAGHDAD - Insurgents killed four members of Iraq's security forces and a city engineer in separate incidents across the Iraqi capital Sunday evening, officials said.
Iraqi police and hospital officials said gunmen killed an off-duty traffic policeman in a drive-by shooting in eastern Baghdad around 8 p.m., and shot dead an Iraqi army colonel in his car downtown.
Assailants killed two more policemen in separate incidents later Sunday in Baghdad, as well as a city engineer northeast of the capital.

Jan 02, 2022 06:11 PM
COLUMBUS, Ohio - Authorities have identified a man suspected of killing a sheriff's deputy and injuring a police officer in a gun battle at a western Ohio trailer park.
The Clark County sheriff's office says 57-year-old shooting suspect Michael Ferryman also was killed during the New Year's Day standoff in the Enon Beach mobile-home park, about 50 miles west of Columbus.
The sheriff's office provided few details about Ferryman on Sunday.
Navy to investigate lewd videos shown on carrier
Jan 02, 2022 05:38 PM
NORFOLK, Va. - The Navy said Sunday it will investigate "clearly inappropriate" videos broadcast to the crew of nuclear-powered aircraft carrier in which a top officer of the ship used gay slurs, mimicked masturbation and opened the shower curtain on women pretending to bathe together.
The star of the videos, made in 2006 and 2007, is a former Top Gun pilot who now commands the same ship, the Norfolk-based USS Enterprise, which was deployed in the Middle East at the time and is weeks from deploying again.
The Virginian-Pilot newspaper reported on the videos in its Sunday editions and posted an edited version of one video on its website.
