Facebook is testing a controversial new strategy they claim will help protect its users from becoming victims of revenge porn.
The social media outlet wants you to send them nude photos so the company can recognize and block the photos if they're ever posted without consent. The person would then be instructed to send their sensitive photos to him or herself on Facebook Messenger.
"This partnership gives Australians a unique opportunity to proactively inoculate themselves from future image-based abuse by coming to our portal and reporting tool", said Julie Inman Grant, Australia's eSafety Commissioner, in a statement.
The idea is that the best way to combat revenge porn if you suspect someone would do that to you is to teach Facebook's algorithms how you look naked, so pictures of you can't be shared online using Facebook's services. There's no word yet on how long the trial may run. It was even the topic of a Netflix documentary titled, "Revenge Porn".
Jameis Winston out for several weeks, say Buccaneers
The first overall pick in the 2015 draft has made 40 consecutive starts to begin his National Football League career. Koetter made the announcement after doctors examined the results of an MRI on Winston's right shoulder.
Once Facebook is notified, they use image-matching technology to access and tag the image to prevent anyone from sharing it on their platforms. One in five Australians aged 16-49 have experienced image-based abuse but women aged 18-24 are more often targeted, the eSafety website said. Should someone attempt to upload that same nude image, with the same digital footprint, Facebook's technology would prevent that from happening.
The limited pilot program is available in three other countries: the U.S., U.K., and Canada. Once a photo is reported as revenge porn, it is tagged using photo-matching technology in the hopes of stopping it from further dissemination.
The publication reports that Australia is one in four countries taking part in this "cutting-edge technology". Roughly four percent of US internet users have been victims of revenge porn, according to a 2016 Data & Society Research Institute report.
Facebook's customer support team will then review a blurred version of the image to ensure it's explicit, then "hash" it before deletion. Protecting people from revenge porn. The original image is encrypted and stored as a file on Facebook's servers like a virtual fingerprint, so it should stay secure once you upload it through Facebook Messenger.
