Qualcomm Inc. has sued Apple Inc., accusing the iPhone maker of failing to abide by the terms of a software license and said it may have used its unprecedented access to that code to help Qualcomm-rival Intel Corp.
In its United States case, Qualcomm alleges that it has six patents developed in the past four years that improve battery life in mobile devices and that 'Apple uses these technologies in its devices but is not paying for them'.
As things now stand, Apple utilizes chips from Qualcomm and Intel, so suitable terms must be agreed before they can continue with their mutually beneficial collaboration. Back in January, Apple sued Qualcomm for allegedly withholding $1 billion in rebates because it complied with Korean regulators investigating Qualcomm.
It's already attempted to in the past, as the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus carried both Intel and Qualcomm chips, as did this year's iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus.
Court partially blocks Trump's transgender military ban
The Trump administration may appeal Kollar-Kotelly's decision , but for now, the proposed ban remains unenforceable. However, the judge denied the plaintiff's motion to block the ban on funds for gender reassignment surgery.
While the details of the suit are scarce right now, Bloomberg reports Apple "made an email request for proprietary information from Qualcomm and included an Intel engineer on the distribution list".
In another instance, Qualcomm alleged that an Apple engineer working on a competing chip asked an Apple engineer working with Qualcomm to get technical information from Qualcomm. Notably, the lawsuit comes days after a report that Apple is designing future generation iPhones that don't use a Qualcomm chip at all.
If Qualcomm loses that business, it would cut the company's revenue by about 7.5 percent, Raymond James & Associates estimates.
The lawsuit is part of an ongoing legal battle between the two companies. But the escalating legal action is taking a toll on Qualcomm's financial performance-a 90 percent year-over-year drop in quarterly profit, the company CEO said on Wednesday.
