Hurricane Irma reaches Florida after ravaging the Caribbean

Naples Fla

The Miami-Dade Police Department also said Sunday morning that its officers can not respond to emergency calls and warned residents to stay indoors.

Hurricane Irma made landfall in Florida in the wee hours of Sunday.

The worst affected by the Hurricane so far are the Caribbean islands, where a total of 24 people lost their lives and hundreds were rendered homeless.

"Just left the island and said goodbye to everything I own", the 62-year-old Ball said.

Another 3.5 million are vulnerable to storm surge, which could reach 15 feet, inundating areas from Captiva to Cape Sable.

At 4 a.m. there was a storm surge of two feet in Key West, and 84 miles per hour wind gusts there.

The National Hurricane Center reported that hurricane force is beginning to speed up as wind gusts in the area. It left more than 20 people dead across the Caribbean and as it moved north over the Gulf of Mexico's bathtub-warm water of almost 90 degrees, it was expected to regain strength. It was likely to regain Category 4 status before striking Florida, said NHC spokesman Dennis Feltgen.

"We had (hurricane) Harvey just the previous month in Houston and today we are trying to cope up with the Hurricane Irma in Florida".

Although the United States territory avoided a direct hit, its infrastructure was badly affected - more than half of the island's three million residents were without power and officials said many could be cut off for several days.

The weather service placed at least 36 million people under a hurricane warning as of Saturday night.

It will then continue up the coast making a second landfall between Fort Myers and Sarasota later in the day, said Jeff Masters, co-founder of Weather Underground in Ann Arbor, Michigan.

The City of Miami said on its Twitter account early Sunday that firefighters couldn't respond in time to the woman in the Little Haiti neighborhood. Jose neared Category 5 strength as it followed Irma's path earlier this week.

"When it made that turn, that's when I had that anxiety pit in my stomach. She's tracking us, that feisty minx", Cardona, 54, said by phone.

Storm chasers have also driven through the outer reaches of Irma to see how destructive it is.

People walked through ankle-deep water in Caibarien, a fishing town where streets were flooded and covered in seaweed. Elsewhere, winds toppled trees and utility polls or ripped apart roofs.

"Water level is higher today", he said via text message Sunday morning. "This was the strongest storm Caibarien ever had".

President Donald Trump has warned people in Florida to stay out of the way of the storm's path and find safety as Irma approaches the southeastern-most USA state.

[It's] the most massive evacuation I think in the history of the state, millions of people have moved.

In Palm Beach, President Donald Trump's waterfront Mar-a-Lago estate was under evacuation order. Forecasters say they are moving the forecast track slight west again. "In this particular case, virtually the entire state is being impacted by the storm", Rubio said. A bigger concern was storm surge, which was still rising in the morning.

Efforts are focused on the British Virgin Islands, where police officers from 14 forces are due to arrive to help maintain law and order and assist with the search for missing people. Irma may also curb natural gas demand in one of the largest U.S. markets. "She's tracking us, that feisty minx", Cardona said by phone.

As for communities in Irma's path along Florida's west coast, Rappaport said he was very concerned.
