Diego Godin rejects Manchester United deadline day approach

Raphael Varane won the World Cup with France last month

It seems Man Utd have also made an audacious attempt to sign Godin as ESPN are one of several outlets reporting they have made it clear to Atletico Madrid they are willing to meet the defender's £18m release clause.

Manchester United made an eleventh hour effort to sign Uruguayan global Diego Godin, but their advances have been rebuffed by the defender. The Red Devils have been scouring the market for a new defensive addition, but so far have failed to make any progress in their pursuit.

United made a late €9million offer for Godin on transfer deadline day, with manager Jose Mourinho desperate to add a new centre back.

Godin is into the final year of his contract at the Wanda Metropolitano, but Atletico are not actively looking to cash in and will therefore play hardball.

Nicolas Maduro ‘survived assassination attempt involving exploding drones’
In an impassioned address to the nation, Maduro said some of the "material authors" of an attack with drones are now in custody. Leftist Maduro, who replaced President Hugo Chavez after his death in 2013, has linked the attack to Colombia and the U.S.

The 32-year-old has plied his trade in the Spanish capital since 2010 following a switch from Villarreal.

Godin, who was one of the best defenders at this summer's World Cup as Uruguay reached the quarter finals, could be the answer to Mourinho's prayers.

There is no word yet as to whether or not the Manchester club have made an official bid for the defender.

In his press conference ahead of Friday's season opener against Leicester City, the Portuguese did not sound optimistic about his club's chances of signing anyone before the transfer window slams shut.
