Republican narrowly scrapes ahead in dramatic OH congressional race

But Trevor Moffitt, a public health doctoral student at The Ohio State University who voted for O'Connor, said he felt Balderson's attacks on Democrats went too far.

Today is primary election day in Kansas.

Mr Balderson and his Republican allies have backed away from the tax plan in recent weeks, training their fire instead on top House Democrat Nancy Pelosi.

The midsummer affair comes as Trump's shadow looms over primary contests in four other states on Tuesday, none bigger than Kansas, where the Republican president roiled the governor's race Monday by opposing the sitting GOP governor on the eve of the election.

The president's Senate pick, John James, whom Trump called a "potential Republican star", also won.

A special election that tested U.S. President Donald Trump's clout and cost both parties millions of dollars in battleground OH was too close to call late Tuesday.

Mr. Trump's fingerprints were on several of the contests, including in Kansas where he threw his support behind Secretary of State Kris Kobach, vice chairman of the White House's now defunct voter commission, in his race against Gov. Jeff Colyer, who took over after Gov. Sam Brownback resigned to accept an ambassadorship.

Balderson also had several stumbles.

Ohio's Republican Gov. John Kasich said the race shouldn't even be close, but it is.

Trump took the district with 53 percent of the vote in 2016, just one-point below Mitt Romney's performance there in 2012.

China says tariff threat against US 'justified'
These new tariffs would affect about 38% of all American exports to China, which are worth about $170 billion in total. Washington suggested the rate on the proposed extra tariffs could be increased from 10 to 25 per cent.

Democrats looking for a shocking underdog win in a special election in OH on Tuesday are hoping not only to snatch a House seat in a historically Republican district, but also to energize their national effort to fight President Trump's agenda and reclaim a congressional majority.

Democratic challenger Danny O'Connor is critical of both Republicans and Democrats.

The 12th district has numerous hallmarks of areas that could be weak spots for Republicans this cycle - well-educated, relatively affluent suburbs that may have soured on Trump and are looking to register their frustration through their midterm vote. Below, see live results below as they come in.

A national poll watcher says a coastal S.C. congressional district could flip to Democratic in a "blue tsunami". "Tomorrow we rest and then we keep fighting through to November", O'Connor told supporters at a post-election party.

Voters sign in to cast their ballots in a polling station in Westerville, Ohio.

Democrats need to win 23 seats to take back control of the House, and that path doesn't even run specifically through districts like Ohio's 12th. Whoever wins will have to defend their seat again this November.

The day's races in five states, like many before them, tested the persistence of Trump's fiery supporters and the momentum of the Democratic Party's anti-Trump resistance.

Whitmer will face Republican Bill Schuette, who was endorsed by Trump, in November.

CNN chief national correspondent and anchor John King on Tuesday noted that a Democratic win in Tuesday's special election in a heavily-red district in OH could signal a blue wave in the fall that would likely put impeachment "on the table".
