USA says remains returned by North Korea likely American

U.S. Intel Reportedly Says North Korea is Building New Missiles As Trump Continues to Boast of Progress

North Korea handed over 55 boxes of remains last week as part of an agreement reached during a June summit between its leader, Kim Jong Un, and U.S. President Donald Trump.

Vice President Mike Pence attended a ceremony in Hawaii Wednesday to receive remains of United States soldiers killed in the Korean War, a bloody conflict which, as History.com records, ended 65 years ago last Friday. Some experts say South Korea can't agree on any drastic measures to reduce animosity unless the North takes serious nuclear disarmament steps.

"Some have called the Korean War the forgotten war but today we prove these heroes were never forgotten".

"I don't have any announcement today but it's natural to get a lot of business done. but we are not there for any announcements", the official said.

The planes will fly them to Hawaii, where they will undergo an in-depth forensic analysis, in some cases using mitochondrial DNA profiles, at a Defence Department laboratory to establish identifications.

From the base, the remains will be taken to a laboratory in Hawaii for possible identification, with the goal of matching them with any of the 7,697 US personnel who remain are unaccounted for after the Korean War. They set the caskets gently on risers lined up inside the hangar.

Troops from 16 other United Nations member countries fought with the USA during the war.

Pompeo has led talks with Pyongyang to denuclearize following a June summit between North Korean leader Kim Jong Un and U.S. President Donald Trump.

In April, the leaders of North and South Korea met and agreed to work toward a permanent peace treaty that would end the war.

But forensics experts say that identifying the remains may take years, according to a report by New York Magazine on Wednesday.

While North Korea honored its promise to return the remains of fallen us soldiers during the Korean War, there have been troubling reports that Pyongyang will never truly disarm.

Satellite imagery gathered by USA intelligence agencies indicates that North Korea is building new ballistic missiles at a factory just outside its capital, according to The Washington Post.

The recovery efforts stalled for more than a decade because of a standoff over North Korea's nuclear ambitions and a previous United States claim that security arrangements for its personnel working in the North were insufficient. Trump has spoken frequently about the desire to have as many remains of American service members returned as possible.

"This is a great first step in terms of bringing a bunch of fallen Americans home", said Rear Admiral Jon Kreitz, the deputy director of the agency in charge of identifying the remains, the Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency (DPAA).

The remains recovered last week were the first received by the USA since 2005, when efforts to repatriate bodies stopped amid tensions between Washington and Pyongyang.

The North suspended its missile and nuclear tests and shut down its nuclear test site, and recent satellite photos indicated the country had also begun dismantling key facilities at its main rocket launch site.

Pompeo said last week that North Korea was continuing to produce fuel for nuclear bombs.

Richard Downes' father is one of the Korean War missing. Trump declared soon after the summit that North Korea no longer posed a nuclear threat.
