Israel kills seven militants amid tensions on Syria's border

The fighters had been detected by Israeli surveillance well before they crossed into the region

Underlining the tensions, Israel killed seven militants in an airstrike on the Syrian-held part of the Golan Heights, Israeli radio said.

On Thursday, Moscow said Russian Federation would deploy its military police on the Golan Heights frontier between Syria and Israel, after weeks of mounting volatility in the area.

Lieberman said that, for there to be long-term quiet between Israel and Syria, Assad must abide by a 1974 United Nations -monitored armistice that set up demilitarized zones on the Golan.

Lieberman also pointed out that the Israeli air defense system, as well as the Israeli army forces, are prepared for any type of emergency threatening Israel's security.

Israel has vowed not to let Iran establish a military presence in Syria.

Donald Trump says he’s open to meeting Iranian president with ‘no preconditions’
Mr Trump said he had "no preconditions" for a meeting with the Iranians, adding: "If they want to meet, I'll meet". US Secretary of State Michael R Pompeo is also scheduled to visit Singapore and Jakarta.

"It did not seem as if they were fleeing, seeking refuge", Conricus said.

It has also pledged to prevent its arch foe Iran from entrenching itself militarily in Syria and a series of recent strikes that have killed Iranians in Syria have been attributed to Israel. They didn't elaborate but later Putin said he agreed with Trump on securing Israel's border with Syria in line with the 1974 deal.

Asked whether Israel should be less wary of possible flare-ups on the Golan - much of which it seized from Syria in the 1967 war and annexed in a move not recognised overseas - Lieberman said: "I believe so". He said a preliminary assessment was that the infiltrators were Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (ISIS) militants.

"The IDF remains, on high readiness, and levels of alert for any threats - be it in the air or on the ground - and we of course remain committed to defend Israeli citizens and Israeli sovereignty", Conricus told journalists. The army's announcement came shortly after Defence Minister Avigdor Lieberman toured a Patriot missile defence battery in northern Israel during a military preparedness drill.

In Amman, Jordan's Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi said the Syrian government has not officially requested the opening of the Syria-Jordan border after government forces recaptured its side of a crossing from rebels last month.
