California wildfires scorch an area the size of Los Angeles

The fire has killed six people, including two firefighters, and destroyed 1,060 homes and almost 500 other buildings, including businesses, barns and warehouses, officials said. The fire has killed six people in Shasta County, including two firefighters, and destroyed 1,555 structures.

Some of the 40,000 residents who were forced to flee as the Carr Fire approached say they did not get any notification ahead of time, according to Sam Harnett, a reporter with member station KQED in San Francisco. "Our fires are probably more intense in terms of heat but those fires are flashier and fast moving so you have to be extra careful and really have your wits about you as a firefighter when fighting those fires". Crews are mopping up burned areas on the southern end of the fire.

Jennings said both the Vichy Fire and Western Fire were officially Cal Fire incidents and he could not provide further details. Of the 20 people reported missing as of Monday, all have now been accounted for.

"So we're going to have to adapt, we're going to change our technology, but in the meantime we're going to spend a hell of a lot of money and there is going to be a lot of unpleasant events and suffering as a result", said Governor Brown.

The largest blaze burned in the Redding area, in Shasta County north of Sacramento.

To illustrate his point, Brown told USA media the state had already spent more than a quarter of the budget allocated for resources across the entire annual fire season in the month of July alone.

Chamisa on Monday said there was an attempt to "suppress and frustrate" the vote in urban areas where he has strong support. With 5.6 million registered voters, the results of the presidential, parliamentary and local elections are due by August 4.

The Ranch Fire is now also well established in the Mendocino National Forest.

The fast-moving wildfire has already charred 140 square miles, and it's still only 24 percent contained.

A 100-square mile fire near Yosemite National Park prompted evacuation orders on Wednesday (Thursday NZT) for the community of Wawona inside the park, which has fewer than 200 residents.

Of the firefighting force of 12,000 on the ground, around 3000 are prison inmates deployed as part of the Conservation Camps program which is jointly managed by CalFire and the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation (CDCR).
