"Threats, sanctions and PR stunts won't work", Mohammad Javad Zarif said in a tweet. In fact, both Riyadh and Abu Dhabi outspend Iran on weaponryby a factor of five and two, respectively, despite having far smaller populations. Unless Washington is ready to rethink its arms sales to its Arab allies - and Trump clearly wants to sell them more weapons - it should have no expectations that Iran will cut back its missile program.

" 'Trump may take advantage of this over-excitement, ' he said, the state-run IRNA news agency reported". "It could be a test for us".

In May, the United States abandoned a deal which curbed Iran's nuclear activities in return for the lifting of sanctions.

"Today, we are in a very critical point in history regarding the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action and Europe's transparent measures to compensate for the U.S.' unlawful withdrawal from the deal is very important for the Iranian nation", he said.

Mr Trump said he had "no preconditions" for a meeting with the Iranians, adding: "If they want to meet, I'll meet".

Another politician, Mostafa Kavakebian, called the President Trump "untrustworthy" and signaled that any talks at this time would make Iran appear weak.

In his first public comments after the remarks, Rouhani himself avoided mentioning Trump's comments, instead stressing the need for the other nations involved in the nuclear deal to forge ahead with their pledges of trying to salvage it. "I'll meet with anybody", he said.

Trump softened his tone in a speech last Tuesday in which he said he was ready for talks with Iran, which he reiterated during Monday's press conference.

Chamisa on Monday said there was an attempt to "suppress and frustrate" the vote in urban areas where he has strong support. With 5.6 million registered voters, the results of the presidential, parliamentary and local elections are due by August 4.

US Secretary of State Michael R Pompeo is also scheduled to visit Singapore and Jakarta.

Iran's interior minister said Tehran did not trust Washington as a negotiating partner. Good for the country, good for them, good for us and good for the world.

Rouhani, a pragmatist who reduced tensions with the West by striking the nuclear deal in 2015, is facing a growing backlash since US President Donald Trump pulled out from the pact in May and said he will reimpose sanctions that seek to throttle Iran's economy, including its lifeblood oil exports.

"With current America and these policies, there will definitely not be the possibility of dialog and engagement, and the United States has shown that it is totally unreliable", Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Bahram Qasemi told reporters.

Hamid Reza Asefi, a former Iranian diplomat, also said that Trump should bring Washington's hawks, including Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and National Security Advisor John Bolton, into coordination with his own stances before any possible talks with Iran.

Iranian President Hassan Rouhani did not address Trump's comments on Tuesday, instead focusing on the "illegal" USA withdrawal from the Iran nuclear deal back in May, in a statement posted on his official website. A second, more robust wave of oil-related sanctions is set to snap back November 4.

Iran's currency plumbed new depths on Monday, dropping past 120,000 rials to the dollar, but Trump's expressed willingness to negotiate with Tehran sparked a minor recovery on Tuesday to 110,000 rials on the unofficial market.
