Prosecutors advise witnesses in Manafort trial: Avoid the T-word

Paul Manafort spent $18,000 on karaoke equipment court documents reveal

It's the first trial resulting from the investigation by special counsel Robert Mueller into Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election.

While prosecutors have said they will not present evidence of collusion at this trial, they are seeking to provide details of Manafort's work in Ukraine, raising the possibility that new information about his Russian connections could emerge. Jon Brain reports from Washington.

Prosecutors have also listed Rick Gates, Manafort's deputy on the Trump campaign and a longtime business associate, as one of the 35 potential witnesses they could call to testify during the trial.

"It seems to me we're seeing deeper ties that Manafort has had financially with his business deals in the Ukraine and with Russian Federation", said Shanlon Wu, a former lawyer for Manafort associate Rick Gates, who pleaded guilty in February and is aiding Mueller's probe.

Mueller's team also argued that Manafort's motion would "exclude virtually every exhibit containing the name of several key government witnesses, thereby preventing the jury from hearing evidence that corroborates the witness's expected testimony and demonstrates the witness's credibility".

"I really hope the president continues to watch and make public comments about this case".

Manafort is also facing charges of acting as an unregistered foreign agent under the Foreign Agents Registration Act, as well as conspiracy to commit money laundering and making false statements, but those will be heard in a second trial, scheduled for September in Washington, D.C. Earlier this month, the judge denied a bid by Manafort to move the case out of Alexandria. While scrutiny of the Ukraine dealings pushed the one-time campaign chairman out, Gates stayed on, serving as a liaison to the Republican National Committee, while earning the reputation of a competent executor of the Trump team's day-to-day operations.

"Perhaps he believes that he's done nothing wrong, and because he's done nothing wrong, he's unwilling to plead guilty to any crime whatsoever - even if it's a lesser crime", said Jimmy Gurule, a Notre Dame law professor and former federal prosecutor.

The filing comes a day before Manafort's trial on bank and tax fraud charges is set to begin.

The Virginia trial is expected to last at least two weeks. Manafort faces 32 counts of filing false tax returns and bank fraud stemming from his work for former Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych, a pro-Russian leader. More than $75 million flowed through the offshore accounts, $30 million of which was concealed from the Treasury Department, according to the indictment.

Manafort has spent the past month in prison in Alexandria outside Washington after having his house arrest and $10 million bail revoked by a federal judge for allegedly tampering with witnesses in another pending case.

Ellis has since ruled that Mueller is acting within the scope of his investigation in pursuing charges against Manafort.

Trump reacted to Manafort's jailing in June by describing it as "very unfair".

"He's not Manafort's brain, but he knows Manafort's brain", said Patrick Cotter, a former prosecutor, who worked on the conviction of John Gotti.

Manafort had been under federal investigation since 2014 over suspicion of illegal lobbying and financial improprieties. Legal experts say Manafort can be indicted in state court for numerous same crimes for which he's been charged by the special counsel.
