Tour de France 2018: Geraint Thomas wins to make sporting history

Tour de France winner Great Britain's Geraint Thomas wearing the overall leader's yellow jersey and classification third-placed Great Britain's Christopher Froome cross the fisnish line of 21st and last stage of the 105th edition

Thomas was second on the stage, nabbing six bonus seconds to extend his lead over closest rival Tom Dumoulin to two minutes and five seconds.

In second overall was Dumoulin at 1m 51s, with Froome at 2m 24s, an order unchanged by the final and 21st stage - 116km from Houilles to the Champs Elysées - won by Norwegian Alexender Kristof (UAE-Team Emirates) from German John Degenkolb (Trek-Segefredo) and Frenchman Arnaud Demare (Groupama-FDJ). There was a late scare for Thomas in the time trial, when he appeared to lose control of his bike.

Dumoulin had to console himself with his third career Tour stage win - all of which have come in individual time trials. "I'm 27 years old and hopefully I'll get stronger, especially in the mountains, and hopefully one day I will be able to win".

Thomas has been known for grit and determination that surpasses what is he norm for cyclists.

"It has been a great race - if we look at all our individual riders they are unbelievable", Thomas, who won two mountain stages including one up the iconic Alpe d'Huez climb, told a news conference.

I felt good and started putting the power down but then took every corner super slow. "The Welsh angle brings a whole different dimension", said Team Sky principal Dave Brailsford, who was also brought up in Wales.

"I know people won't believe it, but it was only on Friday night that I started to think about it", he said Saturday (via the Guardian).

Wicker: I second Trump's support of Iranian people
Signed in 2015, the deal puts restrictions on Iran's nuclear program in return for relief from economic sanctions. For proof of this look no further than the dialogue taking place on Twitter between Iran and Donald Trump .

Froome was the favourite to retain his title but he paid the price for the efforts he made to win the Giro d'Italia in May as he just failed to become the first man in 20 years to achieve the Giro-Tour double.

Thomas, who now has another major honour to accompany his pair of Olympic gold medals on his mantlepiece, won the eleventh and twelfth stages in the Alps while continually picking up advantages elsewhere to accumulate a final time of 83 hours, 17 minutes and 13 seconds.

Froome and other Team Sky riders, including Thomas, were booed by the crowd standing on the side of the road throughout the three-week race.

It says enough that Thomas was slightly bewildered by the prospect of being labelled Wales' biggest sportsman when it was put to him.

Thomas follows Wiggins and Froome into the record books.

France's Julian Alaphilippe and world champion Peter Sagan, of Slovakia, both finished within the time cut and are set to claim the polka dot jersey for the mountain classification and the green jersey for the points classification, respectively. "I wasn't sure I could make it this far, and I just enjoyed crossing the finish line today". He's been a massive part of my Tour victories. "When he was with me full-time, we lived in Manchester or in Italy".

With his title, Thomas joins rugby's Sam Warburton and football's Gareth Bale in the Welsh sports half of fame as all three of them were educated at Whitchurch high school.
