Quake Hits Indonesia's Lombok Island, USGS Says

At least 10 people have died and dozens of others injured after a powerful 6.4 magnitude quake hit Indonesia's holiday island of Lombok.

Some 200 people from 35 families whose house were damaged or destroyed had pitched tents there. "But we heard that quakes as strong as the one early in the morning may occur and that makes my family and I very nervous and scared".

According to the United States Geological Survey, the natural disaster hit about 11:47 Mountain Standard Time with its epicenter located 80 miles northeast of Mataram on the island of Lombok.

According to Indonesia's National Disaster Management Agency, at least 162 people have been injured by the tremors, which occurred about 140 miles east of Bali.

A 30-year old Malaysian woman was among the victims, he said, adding those hurt were hit by debris.

"There are still 560 people trapped".

He said the three fatalities and injuries were caused by falling slabs of concrete.

In a short statement to the ABC, the Australian Consulate General in Bali confirmed that no Australians are believed to be among those affected at this stage. Authorities were still monitoring its impact. The roof of a health clinic had collapsed and its walls had cracked.

More than 160 residents in Lombok were injured, with thousands more displaced after their homes were damaged by the quake.

Over a hundred of subsequent tremors were recorded, with the largest aftershock recorded at 5.7 magnitude, Indonesia's Meteorological, Climatological and Geophysics Agency said.

The USGS said the quake struck at a shallow depth of 6.4 kilometers (3.98 miles).

Hours earlier, a deep 6.0 magnitude quake struck off eastern Indonesia on Saturday, the USGS also reported.

More than 500 tourists, including US and European Union citizens, are trapped on a volcano on the Indonesian island of Lombok, after a powerful natural disaster caused landslides that blocked hiking trails.
