Palestinian protest icon Ahed Tamimi out of Israeli prison

Ahed Tamimi, the Palestinian teenage girl turned protest symbol who was filmed hitting Israeli soldiers a year ago, has been released after serving an nearly eight-month prison sentence.

Ahed Tamimi, who spent eight months in an Israeli prison for slapping an Israeli soldier, is seen upon her release in her home village of Nabi Saleh, July 29, 2018.

Easily recognisable by her unruly mop of curly red hair, she has become for many a symbol of resistance to Israel's half-century-old military occupation.

Israeli forces have detained two Italian graffiti artists who were working on a mural of a jailed Palestinian teenager Ahed Tamimi.

"I thank everyone who stood by me while I was in prison".

"From this martyr's house, I say: resistance is continuing until the occupation is removed", she told reporters after her release, wearing the trademark Palestinian keffiyeh scarf.

Tamimi had lashed out at the soldiers because she saw them shoot her 15-year-old cousin in the head with a rubber bullet.

Supporters in her family's West Bank village of Nabi Saleh welcomed home the teen with banners and Palestinian flags. For Palestinians, she is a hero, jailed for standing up to soldiers occupying her land and intruding upon her family home.

In a sign of her popularity, a pair of Italian artists painted a large mural of her on Israel's West Bank separation barrier ahead of her release.

The same court hearing freed Nour Tamimi immediately, when she accepted a plea deal.

Emery comments on Arsenal contract offer to midfielder

After being released by the soldiers, Tamimi made brief comments to crowds and journalists gathered, saying she hoped everyone would come to a news conference later in the day.

Lasky included in her complaint addressed to the attorney general that one of the interrogators questioned Ahed in a way inappropriate for a female minor including remarks about her looks that amounted to sexual harassment.

They were expected to be released at the Jbara checkpoint near Tulkarem, but there were later indications they would be taken to a crossing at Rantis.

She was 16 at the time and originally faced 12 charges, but pleaded guilty in March to four charges including assault.

Israeli police said they were caught in the act along with another Palestinian and arrested for vandalism.

Many Israelis also praised the restraint of the soldiers, who remained calm throughout, though others said her actions merited a tougher response.

Her case has also focused attention on the arrest and detention of Palestinian juveniles by Israel.

There had been slight tension at the checkpoint before Tamimi's arrival as a few men with Israeli flags approached supporters holding Palestinian flags.

Dozens of relatives, her immediate family and her friends, had waited for Tamimi since early on Sunday, along with many journalists.
