House Republicans seek impeachment of DOJ's Rosenstein

GOP Lawmakers File Articles Of Impeachment Against Rod Rosenstein

House Republicans are considering whether to force a vote on a resolution to impeach Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein. Politico reports that they filed the articles of impeachment hours after meeting with Justice Department officials to discuss demands for documents. It was a message to Trump, who has railed against the Mueller probe on a regular basis as the investigation gets closer and closer to him.

Late Friday we learned that members of the House Freedom Caucus moved a step closer to impeaching Deputy US Attorney General Rosenstein.

The House Republicans accuse Rosenstein of withholding documents and of being insufficiently transparent in his leadership of the investigation. The agreement came after discussions on the House floor with Judiciary Committee Chairman Robert Goodlatte, R-Va., and the No. 3 House GOP leader, Rep. Steve Scalise of Louisiana. The House passed a resolution last month demanding full compliance with the subpoenas. Back, then, he called the impeachment articles an attempt to "extort" the Department of Justice.

As an individual member Meadows could not offer a privileged resolution for holding Rosenstein in contempt of Congress, but he could do bring up articles of impeachment as a privileged resolution.

Ryan's tone was far different. "We're trying to make it too political", said Rep. Walter Jones, R-NC, when asked about the proposal recently.

The House Judiciary Committee and House Oversight and Government Reform Committee launched a joint investigation previous year into decisions made by the DOJ and FBI.

House Conservatives Introduce Articles of Impeachment Against Deputy AG Rod Rosenstein

He and other House and Senate Republicans say they see no enthusiasm for taking definitive action against the No. 2 official at the Justice Department - either now or nearer to the November election.

Appearing on "Fox & Friends" Thursday morning, Napolitano explained that the conservative lawmakers championing this attempt to impeach Rosenstein are wrong to do so, arguing that the Constitution lays out a very narrow cause for impeachment, and that the behavior of the deputy AG doesn't meet the criteria.

The most substantial effort has surrounded roughly 880,000 pages of documents related to the Justice Department inspector general's investigation into how the FBI handled the Clinton probe.

House Republicans have long complained about the surveillance of onetime Trump campaign aide Carter Page. The president reportedly considered firing Rosenstein last summer.

Rosenstein told lawmakers in that hearing that the Federal Bureau of Investigation was making "unprecedented disclosures" to Congress, and concerns about the speed of those disclosures were "mistaken". "No, I do not", the Wisconsin lawmaker said.

The Department of Justice, under the supervision of Mr. Rosenstein, redacted the names of high-ranking Obama administration officials, such as former White House Chief of Staff Denis McDonough.
