Khan seen winning Pakistan vote marred by rigging allegations

Pakistan Muslim League chief Shahbaz Sharif cast his vote in the eastern city of Lahore soon after polls opened in national elections.

At a midnight press conference when the vote count was underway, PML-N president Shahbaz Sharif said the election was a "blatant violation" of the mandate of the people.

Khan's PTI party has inched ahead of PML-N in recent national polls, but even if it gets the most votes, it will likely struggle to win a majority of the 272 elected seats in the National Assembly, raising the prospect of weeks of haggling to form a messy coalition government.

In Sindh Assembly match, PPP clinched 70 seats, PTI 22, MQM-P 20, GDA 12, PML-N 3 and Tehreek-e-Labbayk Pakistan (TLP) one seat.

Violence gripped Pakistan on election day after several election-related incidents, including the suicide blast in Quetta.

Results will start trickling in within hours, and the likely victor should be known by around 2:00am on Thursday.

A third party, the Pakistan Peoples Party headed by Bilawal Bhutto Zardari - son of slain prime minister Benazir Bhutto - could be called upon to form a coalition with any victor.

More than 105 million people were eligible to vote at 85,000 voting stations nationwide, but the decisive battle was in Lahore, the capital of wealthy Punjab province, where the Sharif family has dominated politics for several decades.

At an election rally to close his campaign on Monday, Khan dismissed the allegations as "a foreign conspiracy".

"Whatever way elections run, I see a lot of instability", said defence analyst Ayesha Siddiqua, who authored Military Inc, a look at the extensive financial holdings of Pakistan's army.

The Election Commission of Pakistan will release the results by constituency, as well as projections and votes polled for the candidates on each seat.

However, in a bid to silence the pre-poll rigging reports, the CEC of Pakistan has given his assurance to people that the election body is trying really hard to hold unbiased elections.

After an election campaign overshadowed by violence and allegations of fraud, Pakistanis voted Wednesday for a new government that will face challenges of a crumbling economy and ongoing bloodshed by militants whose latest attack saw a suicide bomber kill 31 people outside a polling station.

Jeff M. Smith - from the Heritage Foundation - said it was important to acknowledge that a peaceful transition of power via a democratic election is still a rare commodity in Pakistan and thus would be a positive step forward.

The third major party in the race, the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP), also raised alarms over the counting process on Thursday. "So far, we are controlling our supporters, but we won't be able to convince them to exercise restraint if the results were manipulated against our party". The PTI and ruling PML-N are thought to be neck and neck in the elections. The results showed that PTI would be in a position to single-handedly form government in the province.

As well, Khan's vehicle was allowed to enter the polling station, and he also brought members of his party, the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf, inside.

More than 11,000 candidates are vying for 270 seats in Pakistan's law-making National Assembly, the lower house of parliament, and 577 seats in four provincial assemblies.

Millions of voters turned out on Wednesday despite intense heat and a campaign marked by rancour, terrorist attacks, accusations of military meddling and the dramatic return of former prime minister Nawaz Sharif to serve a prison term for financial misdeeds. Others or the non-aligned candidates, including independents, are ahead in 62 constituencies.
