Blockbusters in Alaska set to close; 1 store left in US

Blockbuster Alaska

Alaska's last two Blockbuster video stores are calling it quits, leaving just one store open in the U.S.

This Blockbuster video store in Anchorage, Alaska, will close on Sunday.

In an interview Thursday, Daymude said many customers had called or stopped by to say they'll miss their local Blockbuster.

Apparently it wasn't enough, though: the Anchorage Daily News reports that the Anchorage store is closing this summer after it sells off its inventory. Alaska was a major holdout for the franchise, but finally crumbled to the modern day, joining thousands of other locations that have closed since the franchise filed for bankruptcy in 2010.

The Oregon store manager told the AP that her location becoming the last in the US could possibly boost sales, adding that her business was not in danger of closing.

To the Blockbuster in Bend, Oregon, godspeed.

Oliver said he hoped Russell Crowe memorabilia, including the jockstrap, would help the store attract customers to the store. The once enormous, now-endangered video chain has reportedly closed down two of it's final three remaining stores, Deadline reports.

At the peak of its success, the once-iconic video rental chain had more than 9,000 stores and employed more than 84,000 people worldwide, Deadline reported.

It's not all bad news for video store lovers, though.

Try as he might, Last Week Tonight host John Oliver will not be known as the man who single-handedly saved Blockbuster.

The final two Blockbusters in Alaska are said to still be very profitable. The only remaining Blockbuster in the U.S.? Despite the fact both locations are still pulling a profit, owner Alan Payne says it no longer makes sense to renew either store's leases, which expire in August. Some stores in more remote, less populated parts of the state began closing in the early 2000s. These stores lasted so long, given the long winters and lack of high-speed internet.

"It might end up being a little chaotic for a couple of weeks", Harding told the Associated Press.

As for the fate of that store, the future looks less bleak.

At the Bend location, general manager Sandi Harding said there are no plans to close.
