Kerber ahead in 2nd set; Ostapenko leads 1-0

Kiki Bertens celebrates victory against Venus Williams

With Angelique Kerber also having made the last four, it is the first time two German women will play in the Wimbledon semi-finals since 1931.

The 26-year-old from Wateringen won 6-3 7-6 (7-1) to reach the last eight at Wimbledon for the first time and only the second Grand Slam quarter-final of her career.

The 36-year-old is returning to Wimbledon this year after missing the tennis tournament last summer due to her pregnancy.

Williams responded by raising the intensity level and began striking the ball with ferocious power to break Giorgi's serve for the first time on her way to levelling the match.

When Williams was asked her expectations after winning her first match at Wimbledon in two years, she said, "Not only do I expect to win, I expect to win emphatically".

"Every match starts from zero", Goerges said of her semifinal matchup against Williams.

"I didn't quite take my chances in the first set but tried to stay calm and keep working for the points", added Goerges.

Having shaken off the rust following her lenghthy lay-off after the birth of her daughter Olympia in September, she is rounding nicely into form for the business end of the tournament.

Senator to new acting EPA leader: 'Restore confidence' in agency's mission
MSNBC commentator Chris Hayes implied that Wheeler would be as bad for the environment's health as tobacco is for the human body. Democrats and environmental groups decried Wheeler as an apologist for the coal industry.

If Serena lifts the Venus Rosewater Dish this weekend, she will join an select group of women who have won Grand Slam titles after becoming mothers.

"You never know what to expect from her [Ostapenko]", Cibulkova said. "I'm just pleased with my game today".

Ultimately, Williams found a way to win, 3-6, 6-3, 6-4, but Giorgi gave her all she could handle.

The key game was when Williams powered to a 2-1 lead in the decisive set, against the serve, without conceding a point.

"For me, there's so much farther I want to go to get back where I was, and hopefully go beyond that".

"It sounds insane to maybe have the chance to share a German final in Wimbledon".

Germany's Goerges came from a set down on Court No 1 to defeat her friend and occasional doubles partner Kiki Bertens, the Dutch No 20 seed. That top seeds from the women's side happened now shows that the field is quite even, maybe as well, regardless of who is 1, 2, 3, and 4.

Del Potro held four match points while serving for the victory at 5-4 in the fourth set, but had to wait until the last tiebreaker to advance in 4 hours, 24 minutes, making it the longest men's singles match of the tournament.
