Thailand Cave Rescue Saves 8 Children Trapped For Weeks Underground

Four boys rescued from Thailand cave; rescue efforts will continue tonight

The Thai Navy Seals, who have played a critical role in the treacherous rescue efforts, confirmed that four more boys were retrieved from the Tham Luang Nang Non cave. Another five still await rescue, including the team's 25-year-old coach.

Four were rescued Sunday and another four were rescued on Monday.

Each boy was to wear a full scuba mask, wetsuit, boots and a helmet as they were accompanied by two divers through the cave.

Musk said it was light enough to be carried by two divers, robust, and small enough to get through narrow gaps.

The foreign divers and five Thai divers entered the caves after an Australian doctor gave the all clear.

The boys brought out of the dark, winding cave overnight are "safe and conscious", said Chiang Rai province acting Gov. Narongsak Osatanakorn, who is in charge of the rescue effort.

Weather forecasters warned heavy rain could hit the area through the week. Narongsak said experts told him the new rain could shrink the unflooded space where the boys are sheltering to 108 square feet.

"One of the things we have learned from previous research is that how young people are before they undergo an extreme experience like this is often a reasonably good predictor of how they will do later on after the event".

Goleta brush fire chars 100 acres; 80 percent contained
The Holiday fire in Goleta, California , north of Santa Barbara, grew rapidly overnight and is now at a size of 100 acres. CAL FIRE says the Klamathon Fire continues to threaten the communities of Hornbrook, CA, Hilt, CA, and Colestin, OR.

Since it is rainy season, you can expect nearly everyday you will get some type of rain. There was some rain on Sunday, which caused some water to go into the cave, but officials were able to pump an nearly equal amount of water out. But then oxygen started running low in the cave, and officials also anxious the little piece of real estate the boys and their coach have could be lost.

The hands form a circle, symbolizing the bond and the joint effort by several worldwide teams to rescue the boys. But officials decided "the risk of leaving them there was greater".

Following the initial rescues Sunday, the operation was paused for about 10 hours while divers replenished air tanks along the exit tunnel.

But symptoms of some of these fungal diseases might not pop up during the boys' time in quarantine, Adalja said.

Divers have gone in for the second rescue attempt, Thai officials said. It takes several hours.

The eight boys freed from the cave were quickly transferred to Chiang Rai Prachanukroh hospital, where they were put in isolation to determine they are clear of infection, the Guardian reported. Nine people remain trapped in the cave.

The plight of the boys, aged 11-16, and their coach, has riveted Thailand and much of the world - from the heart-sinking news they were trapped to the first flickering video of the huddle of anxious yet smiling boys brought back by the pair of British divers who found them after penetrating deep into the sprawling cave.

The children's families have not been told which boys have been rescued. A fifth boy has been rescued too, according to multiple reports Monday.
