US payrolls rise 213,000; wage gains slow, unemployment up

Private employers expanded their payrolls for the 93rd consecutive month in June, by 213,000 jobs, the Department of Labor's employment situation report showed yesterday.

While manufacturers opened 36,000 new jobs last month and the education and health sectors contributed 54,000 more, retailers shed 21,600 jobs mainly at general merchandise stores.

The legal services employment numbers come amid a generally positive jobs report for the US economy as a whole, which gained 213,000 jobs in June and reportedly outperformed economists' expectations.

"Overall, this "not too hot, not too cold" report supports our call for four Fed rate hikes in total this year", Gregory Daco, head of USA macroeconomics at Oxford Economics in NY, said in a note. So, taking this all together we have a United States economy growing at around 4% in the current quarter, that has an incredibly tight labour market with headline consumer price inflation potentially rising to 3% next week.

Payroll growth in May was revised up to 244,000 from 223,000 in yesterday's report. The retreat was because the continuation of strong employment prospects has caused a month-to-month uptick in the participation rate, to 62.9% from 62.7%. The agency says more people were seeking job opportunities and that forced the rate up to 6%.

The rise in unemployment isn't as bad as it seems, said Mark Hamrick, a senior economic analyst for Bankrate.com. Average hourly earnings increased by 0.2% month-on-month and 2.7% year-on-year, weaker than economists had forecast.

"There's definitely still a lot of room for the labour market to absorb the slack", Kevin Hassett, chairman of the White House Council of Economic Advisers, said on Bloomberg Television.

In spite of the strong job gains and widely voiced complaints from employers about difficulties in finding workers, wage growth does not appear to be accelerating.

It also boosted the US stock indexes, which are expected to reap weekly gains on Friday after 14 days of losses. And the unemployment rate remains at its lowest in more than 18 years.

The economy continues to show many signs of strength despite the brewing trade war.

The number of workers who have been too discouraged to bother searching for a job was down 155,000 from a year earlier, leaving the total below 360,000.

"He pointed to minutes from the June Federal Open Market Committee, which indicate that some business leaders' "'plans for capital spending had been scaled back or postponed, '" which will likely also affect hiring.

Government payrolls increased by 11,000 jobs in June.

Amid news of May's record-low unemployment rate, House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) shifted attention to allegedly stagnant wage growth under Trump. "That together with rising inflation should keep the Fed on track to raise interest rates two more times this year".
