Wimbledon 2018 Friday results: Serena Williams advances; Venus Williams, Madison Keys eliminated

Wimbledon analyst John McEnroe

It is the biggest win of Pella's career and he is now in the third round of a Grand Slam for the first time.

Former champions Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic battled into the Wimbledon third round on Thursday but third seed and 2017 runner-up Marin Cilic crashed out.

The 36-year-old American now can not meet a top 32 player until the semi-finals after the scattering of the seeds this week.

Keys, who was the US Open runner-up previous year, crashed out 7-5 5-7 6-4 to the Russian on a baking hot Court Three.

Earlier on Friday, fourth seed Alexander Zverev reached the third round for the third year in a row when he came from 2-1 down to complete a 6-4 5-7 6-7 (0) 6-1 6-2 victory over Taylor Fritz in their suspended match.

But the 36-year-old, who is in third round action against Kristina Mladenovic later on Thursday, is ranked as the bookmakers' favourite to lift her 24th major title.

Five-time champion Williams is now the eighth of the top 10 seeds to be knocked out by the opening Friday.

Joachim Low to consider position after Germany's 'deserved' exit
So despite a 3-0 loss to Sweden , Mexico was through to the round of 16 for the seventh straight time. A 0-0 draw would be fine, but if Germany scored, Mexico would be eliminated.

The 17-times Grand Slam champion dug in though and managed to avoid being dragged further into the afternoon, claiming victory when Kukushkin's forehand smacked into the net tape. The American fought back from a set and two breaks down only to falter near the end.

"Yesterday he was playing so, so good, and hitting the ball so hard that I couldn't do anything", the 82nd-ranked Pella said.

Keys lost nine games on the trot from 5-2 up in the first set to 0-4 down in the second. But he easily held serve in the next game and broke Zeballos again to close out the match.

"Honestly, I think today was a massive mishandle of nerves", Keys said.

Makarova, who made the quarter-finals four years ago, beat a weary-looking Lucie Safarova of the Czech Republic 4-6, 6-1, 6-4. "I feel ready to compete".

Meanwhile in the doubles, South Africa's Raven Klaasen and his New Zealand partner Michael Venus advanced to the second round when they defeated Australia duo Lleyton Hewitt and Alex Bolt 7-5, 6-2, 3-6, 6-1.

The 29-year-old Russian needed treatment after securing the decisive break in the final set, but she was able to block out the pain to seal her upset.
