Joachim Low to consider position after Germany's 'deserved' exit

South Korea's Ki Sung-yueng receives medical treatment during the 2018 FIFA World Cup Group F match between South Korea and Mexico at Rostov Arena in Rostov-on Don

On top of Wednesday's defeat to South Korea which sent them out of the tournament in the opening round for the first time in 80 years, Germans are also aghast at turmoil in their proud auto industry over an emissions cheating scandal.

The 58-year-old, who took over in 2006 and recently signed a contract extension through to 2022, said he was taking responsibility for the premature exit after losses to Mexico and South Korea in the group stage.

Toni Kroos said Germany got what they deserved at the World Cup and admitted he and his team-mates were "very sad" and "very angry" after they were knocked out following a 2-0 defeat to South Korea.

A 0-0 draw would be fine, but if Germany scored, Mexico would be eliminated.

The four-time champions finished bottom of Group F after stoppage-time goals from Kim Young-gwon and Son Heung-min secured a famous victory for the Koreans in a dramatic conclusion in Kazan.

So despite a 3-0 loss to Sweden, Mexico was through to the round of 16 for the seventh straight time.

Indirectly, I would say they have had a big bearing on what we are doing now but, in sport and life you just have to keep evolving and improving, and it just shows anyone is vulnerable on any given day. "Basically, we defend with four". "The last game we delivered a good performance was in the autumn of 2017".

It is the first time the Germans have gone out of the finals in the group stage and left Low fielding questions over his future. "Despite one or two negative matches, he has a positive outlook and is a very important player for us", said the coach. "We've definitely grown since the last match".

"We knew that Sweden were leading but we didn't have enough to get a goal. But there is not much time to sit and cry over what happened".

Sweden 1 South Korea 0.

Having sailed through qualification with a flawless 10 wins, the writing was on the wall with just one victory in six pre-World Cup friendlies, and even then a shaky 2-1 win over Saudi Arabia in the days before flying to Russian Federation.

As the game wound down, people started sneaking away and then streaming home after South Korea's second goal in the final minutes.
