Five things to think about after DeAndre Jordan deal

After it initially seemed as if center DeAndre Jordan would exercise his contract option for $24.1 million with the Los Angeles Clippers, the 29-year-old center has chosen to become a free agent.

The move on Nowitzki is designed to create more room under the salary cap, as were the decisions to rescind qualifying offers to shooting guard Doug McDermott and center Salah Mejri, making both unrestricted free agents. But teammates Chris Paul, Blake Griffin and other members of the Clippers invaded Jordan's Houston home until they convinced him to stay in Los Angeles.

The Mavericks also would be willing to sign Jordan as a free agent if he decides to opt out of his deal, according to one of the executives.

How to Watch Tonight’s 2018 NBA Awards
Harden is the third player in Rockets history to win the award, and he is the first since Hakeem Olajuwon won in 1994. Harden averaged 30.4 points, 5.4 rebounds and 8.8 assists and led the Rockets to a franchise-record 65 victories.

Jordan now joins a Dallas side suddenly brimming with potential, with EuroLeague Most Valuable Player Luka Doncic and All-Rookie Second Teamer Dennis Smith Jr forming an interesting backcourt pair. Dennis Smith Jr., taken ninth past year, has been joined by another player who will begin his National Basketball Association career as a teenager in European standout Luka Doncic. And when news broke around midnight Saturday that Jordan will (hopefully) sign with Dallas, Twitter did not disappoint.

Jordan is coming off another solid season in LA, averaging 12 points and 15.2 rebounds in 31.5 minutes per game. In 10 National Basketball Association seasons, all with the Clippers, he has career averages of 9.4 points, 10.7 rebounds, 0.7 assists and 1.7 blocks. The Mavericks, in need of a center, are now the favorite to sign the big man.

Gortat, 34, has started 400 of a possible 410 games over the last five seasons for the Magic, averaging 11.6 points, 9.2 rebounds, 1.5 assists and 1.1 blocks over that span. But the sixth overall pick by Philadelphia in 2013 never blossomed.
