Gareth Southgate: ‘Let Germany defeat be a warning for England’

Romelu Lukaku in contention to face England as Belgium reveal scan results

England and Belgium, already qualified from World Cup Group G, meet on Thursday in what Belgian midfielder Marouane Fellaini says could be a "strange match".

Lukaku has missed training this week after picking up an ankle injury in Belgium's 5-2 victory over Tunisia last Saturday, and he has since had scans to discover the extent of the injury.

"I could see that the players were hungry enough and humble enough to be ready to take on board some of the ideas we were going to try to implement, so I thought it was worth having a go with them and that's probably the biggest thing I am pleased with".

"At the moment, he is still in the recovery phase and had a hard knock against Tunisia, but probably tomorrow is one day too early".

"There's a long way to go and a lot of good players just behind me [on the scoring list]".

"Tomorrow we want to perform well but the priority is not to win": Roberto Martinez.

"It would be very risky and a real gamble to play any of the players who are on a yellow card against England, because you don't want to have any player missing for the knockout stage".

Jan Vertonghen, Thomas Meunier and Kevin De Bruyne are one card away from suspension, as yellow cards are not struck off until the quarter-finals.

The initial phase of the eclipse will be visible in New Zealand before its final stage is seen in parts of South America. Just a few days after the lunar eclipse, Mars will pass by Earth at its closest point to since 2003.

Southgate dismissed talk that finishing as runners-up could be favourable, with the England manager looking to strike a balance between keeping key men fresh and squad players happy.

"I don't think changing the goalkeeper is an option", Martinez explained.

In the end, Sweden stunned Mexico 3-0 in Ekaterinburg in the group's other match and it was those two nations who progressed in first and second place respectively from Group E, after Germany went down to 93rd and 96th minute goals to South Korea.

"I think it will be an interesting game, a 50-50 game, and both teams are qualified so it will be a unusual game", said Fellaini, who plays in England for Manchester United, having made his name for another Premier League club Everton.

The striker is set to face some of his Manchester United teammates when Belgium come up against England in the final Group G game in Kaliningrad on Thursday.

"We just have to decide whether to put him back in or whether it is more beneficial for him to have a slower build up".
