Mohamed Salah has apologised to Egypt's fans after their elimination from the World Cup Monday.

Before the tournament began, Salah was pictured alongside Ramzan Kadyrov, the leader of the Chechen Republic, at Egypt's base in Grozny.

On Monday, CNN referring to a source close to the Liverpool forward, reported that the 26-year-old "considered quitting Egypt national team due to his unhappiness over what had happened in Chechnya", where the team was based in Russian Federation.

"Muhammad Salah is an honorable citizen of the Chechen republic! That's right! I gave Mohamed Salah a copy of the order and a pin at a celebratory dinner that I gave in honour of the Egyptian team", wrote Kadyrov in a social media post.

CNN reported that Salah was uncomfortable with the criticism that followed the photo and is unwilling to being used as a political pawn.

It has already sold out, with sales being pledged to a refugee and immigrant support service based in Texas . She stated that she "hates to see children separated from their families". "This was 100 percent her idea".

The optics of being pictured smiling alongside the Muslim fundamentalist, conservative Chechnyan leader with a long rap sheet of alleged human rights violations and brutality against his political enemies, has brought unwanted controversy down on the amiable, likeable Salah.

Salah made two appearances for Egypt at the World Cup, and found the back of the net twice.

A former Egyptian football player and sports commentator, Abdel Rahim Mohamed, reportedly suffered a heart attack and tragically died after his national team's loss in the FIFA 2018 World Cup match against Saudi Arabia.

"I would like to thank all the people who travelled here and supported us for the three matches. We reached the cup for the first time after 28 years of absence. The players did their best, and I am sure that the future will be better", Salah, who scored twice in the tournament for the Pharaohs, said.

Last season Salah became an global star - ranked alongside the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo, Lionel Messi and Neymar Jr. - due to his goalscoring feats for Liverpool, who he helped reach the Champions League final.
